A compact design, the Vermont class is ideal for dealing with nearby recalcitrant neighbors who have nothing bigger than a small cruiser. The boilers are heated with coal, thus allowing freedom from the wildly unpredictable price of oil. Note the variety of guns; there is one onboard to deal with any target in a proportionate manner. The Vermont's hull is designed with doorless transverse bulkheads; should one compartment experience an unwanted intrusion of water, the other will remain comfortably dry.
