The twelve line of the poem, beginning with "Nothing
beside remains", is sung very quietly on a unison E-flat,
harmonically quite distant from the hymn which is
in the key of E major. The measure of rest after
"remains" is meant to emphasize the emptiness
  the now surrounds the statue.
